Ordered by Netflix, this adventure space drama is an instant hit. A emotional rollercoaster that takes you through all the good and bad feelings of marriage, friendship, and work responsibility. Hilary Swank stars as America's astronaut commander with Josh Charles as her husband. The cast is filled out wonderfully by Talitha Bateman, Ato Essandoh, Mark Ivanir, Ray Panthaki and Vivian Wu. Characters such as Lu and Misha are fully flushed out by a script that isn't scared to look into the deepest scars of its actors. My only knocks would be the amount of crying and emotions I would hope to be absent in our real life astronauts, as well as, the story ark of the daughter played by Bateman. A lot of the portrayal of Alexis is unbelievable, unnecessary, and annoyingly dramatic seemingly just for drama sake.
Definitely a binge on a rainy day type of series, which plays as a 9 hour movie that we couldn't stop. We dont want this ride to end even after the credits on the last episode begins to roll. The science, the actors, the drama, the action, the feelings, the special effects are all purposely thrown at the viewer with perfect score in toe to forcibly induce a swear, cry, or laugh, but you won't be disappointed.
According to The Delite, "Netflix has opted not to renew “Away,” the space drama series starring Hilary Swank. The streamer announced the cancellation in October 2020, about a month after the first season premiered. According to Esquire, the show’s costly budget may have been a contributing factor in the decision, with each episode reportedly costing Netflix over $6 million".
